Low
Vision Evaluations
People with low vision generally fall into two categories:
partially sighted or legally blind. Although very few people
are completely without sight, visual impairment to any degree
can cause minor to severe functional difficulties.
Some of the conditions that can cause diminished vision
are macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, inoperable cataracts,
trauma, and stroke. But anyone who is having difficulty seeing
well enough to perform regular daily tasks, even when wearing
eyeglasses, is a candidate for low-vision evaluation. This examination
differs from a regular eye exam in several ways. The doctor
will use special charts, assess the need for, and test factors
such as glare, contrast, lighting and mobility to determine
the degree of low vision impairment and find the best solution
for treatment.
Dr. Abbott and Dr. Skrzypczak perform the low vision evaluations.
If improvement cannot be achieved through surgery or medication,
both physicians can prescribe optical and non-optical aids that
may enhance the patient’s ability to see and thus improve
their quality of life.
