Know the facts about macular degeneration, vitamin supplements and how they can protect your eye sight.
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is a major study sponsored by the National Eye Institute, one of the government’s National Institutes of Health. In the study, scientists looked at the effect of vitamin and mineral supplements on people with varying types of macular degeneration.
The results of the study showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc, can reduce the risk of vision loss from significant macular degeneration by about 20% in high-risk patients. These supplements do not provide significant benefits to people with mild macular degeneration. The supplements do not prevent the initial development of macular degeneration, and they do not improve vision already lost to macular degeneration. The long-term effects of taking large doses of these supplements are still unknown. It is important to consult with your medical doctor before taking largedose supplements.
Smokers and ex-smokers should NOT take beta-carotene (Vitamin A), as it may increase the risk of lung cancer. Lutein may be used as a substitute for beta-carotene. Example: ICAPSLutein and Zeaxanthin® or Ocuvite-Extra®
